Burning Man in Altspace VR
Burning Man is happening in VR again this year (BRCvr). Apparently, during the pandemic in 2020, there was still a small in-person festival, reserved for the invite-only insiders, but that was probably smaller than the 1,500 that attended Burning Man through a virtual reality headset.
BRCvr in Altspace is one of the more interesting experiments happening in social VR. Any person can create a 3D model, and link it into a full-scale 2019 recreation of the Playa (that was compressed down to 16 MB).
Tour Guides Needed
It was my goal to submit a world this year. While my architecture career is potentially over for good, I see virtual buildings within social VR networks a new frontier. But the year took a different turn for me, as I ended up focusing almost 100% on writing.
That being said, the BRCvr organizers are looking for volunteer tour guides. Seems like the perfect way to tour the virtual city, meet a ton of people, and get some stories for Duke Surfs the Metaverse.
My memory tells me it's happening between August 28th and September 7th. Just 10 days away, and right in-between The Writing Studio and Write of Passage. Perfect. I really do have to focus on the cohort ahead, but I definitely want to spend a few hours at the festival. Last year, I think I spent 10 hours over 2-3 days in BRCvr.
If you have an Oculus Quest, let me know - we should meet up inside.
