Transcending Conceptual Prisons

001 | On building a resilient writing practice

I want to start experimenting with video. Tonight was the start of our last cohort of Write of Passage, and so I used the occasion to test it out. I posted this in my introduction, and here’s the text that went with it:

Hey! This is my 9th cohort, but after my 1st one I deleted my website and stopped writing for months... I wanted to use this intro to explain what tripped me up, and then how I inverted my assumptions to make to the process more unhinged, more aligned, and more sustainable.

BTW, the four conceptual prisons:

  • Topic: the insecurity of being illegible to a stranger;

  • Cadence: the pressure to feed the algorithm;

  • Audience: the assumption that writing needs to be instrumental;

  • Identity: the baggage around your name.
