002 | On shaping thought on camera

Benefits of talking to a camera:

  1. It’s a release valve: in 5 minutes/day I can add to my mosaic of ideas.

  2. Conversational self-awareness: I become aware of the weird faces, gestures, mannerisms, and mouth noises I make, which seem to be “improving” after only 2 days.

  3. Structuring thought in real-time is hard: It’s a parallel process where you (a) articulate your current thought clearly, and (b) remember where you’ve been and where you want to go. Talking without a loose map is how rambling happens.

Here’s another thought I didn’t elaborate on camera. Different mediums have different ratios of ‘time it takes to make the experience’ / ‘length of experience.’ Video is exciting because—if it’s truly done in one-take—it’s the lowest ratio.

  • Long-form essays: 40 hours to make / 20 minute experience : 120x

  • One-take typewriter essays: 1 hour to make / 5 min experience: 12x

  • Unscripted video: 5 minutes to make / 5 minute experience: 1x
